Bunchberry Bombers
Original 9" x 7"
Gouache on Illustration Board

A Clark's Nutcracker and a Steller's Jay check out a ripening crop of bunchberries (dwarf dogwoods) in The Cascade Mountains on a pleasant September day. Birds carry the seeds of bunchberry via air freight and deposit them (often with a side dressing of nutrients) at growing sites throughout the Pacific Northwest from near sea level to subalpine locations. White flowers of this dwarf dogwood appear in May and June with bunches of orange-red berries ripening in late summer and fall.
